How does solar work?
In simple terms, the sun shines and electric current is generated. Photovoltaics (PV) is a method of generating electrical power by converting solar radiation into direct current electricity using semiconductors that exhibit the photovoltaic effect.
Is solar reliable?
Solar panels now have a history of producing electricity reliably for decades. In fact, most manufactures warranty their panels for 20-25 years.
What happens on cloudy or rainy day?
Most residential solar systems in Louisiana are known as grid tied systems. That means they are still connected to your utility service. Your house will still be able to draw power from the utility at night or on rainy days.
What is net metering?
In Louisiana, utilities are required to give you a credit for excess power generation. Simply put, if your solar array produces more power than your home consumes, you will receive a credit for the month instead of a bill. At night, your meter will spin forward when you consume more than you produce, and during the day, your meter will spin backward when your solar array produces more electricity than you consume.
Is my house right for solar?
Most houses are right for one or more solar technologies to offset energy consumption. In addition to solar (PV), solar hot water can be an excellent addition and takes up much less space on the roof. To keep the attic cool, solar attic fans are also a great option.
What size system do I need?
Each system is designed in a custom process that is individual to a specific home or commercial property. Electrical needs and space are only two of the considerations. A complete site survey is necessary to accurately give a recommendation.
How will it affect my property taxes?
It won’t. It is Louisiana state law that your property taxes cannot be raised due to the addition of a solar or other renewable energy system.
How long will the system last?
Most solar panel manufactures warranty their panel’s power production for 25 years. Solar panels have continued to produce power well beyond that time frame.
How long will the installation take?
It really depends on the complexity of your site, the type of installation, and the weather, but your solar installation will typically take between 1-3 days.
Will I be able to monitor my power production/usage?
Yes. An energy monitor can be mounted on your wall or placed on your counter. There are also online monitoring options. This will let you know how much power you are generating from your solar system at any given moment.
What areas do you service?
GreenSouth Energy services the entire state of Louisiana.
